What is a broken link?
A broken link (or dead link) is a hyperlink that points to a page, image or file that no longer exists or can't be reached. Visitors usually see a "404 Not Found" error, and search engines treat many broken links as a sign of a poorly maintained site.
How does this broken link checker work?
Enter your website URL and our crawler opens your pages, collects every link and image, then requests each one and records the HTTP status code. Anything that returns a 4xx or 5xx code, times out or can't be resolved is flagged as broken.
Do broken links hurt SEO?
Yes. Broken links waste crawl budget, stop link equity from flowing through your site and create a poor experience for visitors. Fixing them is one of the quickest technical SEO wins.
How do I find where a broken link is on my page?
Click Locate next to any link in the results. You'll see the page with the link highlighted in red, and you can switch to the HTML source to see the exact line number and code. If a link appears several times or on several pages, step through each place it appears.
What is a malformed URL?
A link that can never work as written, such as hhttps:// or htp:// (misspelled), https:/site.com (missing a slash), www.site.com without https://, backslashes, an invalid domain, a leftover placeholder like {{url}} or /undefined, or a broken mailto: / tel: link. We report it exactly as it is written in your HTML, with the line number and what to fix.
What is a soft 404?
A soft 404 is a page that says "Page not found" but returns a normal 200 status code, so search engines may index an error page. We flag crawled pages whose title or main heading looks like an error page. We also flag thin pages: pages with fewer than about 50 words of main content, not counting menus, headers and footers.
Does it check my sitemap?
Yes. With "Use sitemap" ticked, the checker reads the sitemaps listed in your robots.txt (or /sitemap.xml), checks every URL in them and adds them to the crawl, so pages that aren't linked from anywhere still get checked.
What do the status codes mean?
200 means the link works. 301/302 are redirects – the link works but points somewhere else, so it's best to update it. 404 means not found, 410 means gone permanently, 403 means access is forbidden and 5xx codes are server errors.
How many pages can I scan?
You can scan up to 100 pages per check for free. Choose the number of pages next to the options under the search box. Every link and image found on those pages is checked.
Why is a working link shown as broken?
Some websites block automated checkers or return 403/429 errors to bots even though the page opens fine in a browser. If a link looks fine to you, open it manually to confirm.
How do the daily email alerts work?
Sign in with Google on the dashboard, add your website and pick a time. Every day at that time we open your pages (home page, links and sitemap) and check them. If a page can't be reached (404, server error, timeout) or has fewer than 50 words of main content, we email the Gmail address you signed in with. Fixed problems are cleared automatically, and you can mute pages that are meant to be short.
